Are Dog Training E-Collars Effective?

When it comes to dog training, e-collars (or shock collars) are often marketed as a quick solution for behavior issues. But are they really effective in the long run? At Strong Bond Dog Training, our answer is no. Here’s why.

Using e-collars for dog training are not effective because...

  1. It Creates Dependency on the Device

Using an e-collar often creates reliance on the device to get your dog to respond or behave in a certain way. Rather than building your dog's vocabulary and teaching them the boundaries of your pack, it becomes a crutch that prevents your dog from truly thriving. Heaven forbid it should fall off or stop working... your dog will have no practice responding to you without the collar. Now they're running loose and you're probably even more anxious and frustrated.

  1. They Cause Pain and Discomfort

While marketed as “harmless,” e-collars do cause discomfort and can escalate into causing real pain. This approach contradicts our principle of compassionate training and can lead to increased anxiety and stress in your dog. Think about it. If someone put a shock collar on you and zapped you every time you did something they didn't like, it wouldn't lead to a very nice relationship with them. In fact, you'd probably resent them.

  1. They Diminish Trust

E-collars rely on discomfort to force compliance, which can lead to your dog associating training with fear rather than positive things. Building a trusting relationship with your dog is crucial for lasting behavior changes and for fostering a harmonious life together, and e-collars compromise that foundation.

  1. You End Up with A “Well-Behaved” Dog with a Broken Spirit

Though e-collars may yield a dog that follows commands out of fear, the cost is often a dog with a diminished spirit. Training that focuses on building trust and the bond you share with your dog will foster joy, connection, and engagement—not obedience rooted in avoidance.

Why We Don’t Use E-Collars at Strong Bond

At Strong Bond Dog Training, we believe in methods that build a genuine connection with your dog. Our approach is based on trust, clear communication, and understanding your dog’s needs. By focusing on these elements, we empower you to build a solid relationship with your dog—without ever needing to rely on a tool like an e-collar.

(Spoiler Alert: we've NEVER needed to use an e-collar with one of our clients and we have worked with all kinds of dogs with all kinds of crazy challenges!)

For us, dog training is about partnership, not punishment. Through our methods, your dog will cooperate because they want to follow your guidance, not because they fear the consequences.
